Parisian Tag Step by Step Guide

Layer paints, stamps, stencils and papers to create gorgeous shabby chic tags.

Step 1 Begin by painting a base layer of Chalky Finish Lace on you tag, follow this layer with brayered layers of Rustic, Inheritance and Lace.

Step 2 Add stamped images using Versafine Vintage Sepia. Create Layers in your stamps by stamping one layer then rubbing this back with a baby wipe. Go over with another layer of stamping.

Step 3 Scrunch up our paper elements, unfold and lightly sand with a sanding block. Decoupage this paper layer to your tag.

Step 4 Darken the tag by adding layers of washes. Begin with a light wash of Paynes Grey, adding more intensity towards the edges of the tag. Add further washes of Raw Sienna and Quinacridone Gold.

Step 5 Mix some Raw Umber and Raw Sienna in with Modeling Paste. Place your stencil over the paper area and, using a palette knife, draw the modeling paste through the stencil.

Step 6 Add a layer of Paynes Grey wash to the tag, allowing in to pool around your raised stencil area. Once dry, use White Gesso to dry brush the whole tag. This helps pick out all of the textures as well as giving the tag an aged vibe.

Step 7 For the focal piece, take a greyboard heart and punch 5 holes to the top corner. Next, roughly spread modeling paste over the heart using a palette knife. Take your embellishments and push these in to the paste while it is still wet, lift out to leave an impression.

Step 8 On to your screw head embellishments (the ones we pushed into the paste) add a layer of texture sand paste. Paint these in a rusty finish, you can see a video of the process here.

Step 9 Paint your heart in Quinacridone Violet and add a wash of Paynes Grey so it pools in all the cracks created by the paste. Dry brush the heart in white gesso to highlight all the texture. Take your embellishments and glue these in to the areas created - and wrap rusty wire in and out of the punched holes.

Step 10 Add cut out paper stamps to the top corner of your tag base. Add a number 2 embellishment over these, textured in the same way as the heart but painted in Paynes Grey. Mount your heart on foam pads to the centre of your tag and finish with a little rusty wire wrapped through the top of the tag.
