So Call Me, Maybe? Step by Step Guide

Create your own weather worn wall art featuring a variety of layers and paint techniques.

Step 1 Begin by laying out your design before you paint or stick anything. Once you are happy with the composition, take a photo for reference.

Step 2 Paint your substrate with an initial layer of your darkest Chalky Finish paint. Add areas of wax to form a resist then add a layer of your medium colour of Chalky Finish. Once dry, use a heat tool to melt the wax – rub back the paint layers to reveal the layers underneath.

Step 3 Take your decoupage papers and rip them down to fit your substrate. Add a layer of matte glue to the substrate and spritz the decoupage papers with water before sticking them to the surface.

Add a layer of Crackle Medium in the areas around the papers.

Step 4 Once your Crackle Medium is dry, paint over a layer of your lightest Chalky Finish paint. Once the crackle has formed, rub away areas to give a more natural finish.

Use your palette knife to add Crackle Paste, again in areas.

To pull the background together, use a wash of Paynes Grey to add depth – add splatters if you wish.

Step 5 Added stamped details in Versafine Sepia.

For the bolts, glue them together and add a tiny layer of Texture Sand Paste. Once dry, paint the bolts in Metallic Silver. To give the appearance of rust, paint wash layers of Paynes Grey, Burnt Umber, Yellow Oxide and Quinacridone Gold. Add neat Quin Gold to give depth.

Glue the bolts to the substrate and add a drip of watered Quin Gold for a realistic effect.

Step 6 For the phone dial, paint the layers in Metallic Silver, layer the paint to give a textured effect.

Step 7 To weather the phone dial, add layers of Paynes Grey washes and dry brush in a light colour to bring out the texture.

The paper for the numbers have been aged and stamped, while the dial has been finished with a little red heart to the centre.

Step 8 To finish, glue the dial to the substrate add any finished touched such as washes/ dry brushing if you need to adjust the colour.
