Tutorial: Tainted Love
Create a striking piece of canvas work using contrasting colours and bold embellishments.

For this project you will need; All products available from DecoArt White Gesso Media Fluid Acrylics Prussian Blue Hue Media Fluid Acrylics Payne’s Grey Media Fluid Acrylics Cadmium Red Hue Media Clear Modelling Paste Adny Skinner 8x8” Serendipity Stencil Crackle Glaze Carbon Black Antiquing Cream Titanium White Antiquing Cream
List of supplies used; Assorted Brushes Pallet Knife 20x8” Primed and Stretched Canvas Greyboard Heart Embellishments
Step 1

Begin by drawing modelling paste through your chosen stencil using a pallet knife. Move the stencil up the canvas masking off and selecting certain words to create a textured background.
Step Two

Once the Modelling Paste is dry, create a wash over the canvas using Prussian Blue Hue. Build this wash using darker layers, letting the paint pool around the words to create depth and interest. To add further design elements, build the wash so it is darker towards the bottom of the canvas.
Step Three

Once you have reached a stage you are happy with, dry brush the canvas with white gesso and a stiff brush. Use a tiny amount of paint to begin with, picking out the edges of the words to add highlights. Frame the canvas with a board of Payne’s Grey.
Step Four

Next paint the greyboard heart embellishments in Cadmium Red Hue and fix these across the canvas in a flourish, layer the hearts over one another leaving a break in the middle of the flourish for the main motif.
Step Five

On to a larger heart, apply a layer if Crackle Glaze and leave to dry. Remember a thinner lay of Crackle Glaze will create tightly packed crackles, whereas thicker layers will produce larger cracks. One dry add and layer of Carbon Black Antiquing Cream, ensuring the cream permeates the cracks. Buff the cream from the surface of the heart so it is only left in the cracks, repeat with Titan White Antiquing Cream. Edge the heart with Payne’s Grey to frame and mount to the centre of the flourish using foam pads.
